The Abdu's
Dad’s side of the family is Lebanese and Mom’s side is Irish/English
My Dad’s father, Elias.
I never met him as he died before I was born. He was from a little village high in the mountains of Lebanon. It is said that when he passed, the men is his village wore black for 7 years in his honor.
I believe this picture is circa 1910.
Being Christian in a country that was 90% Muslim had its’ consequences. Living high in the mountains gave my forbearers the religious freedom they sought, mostly, but not always, out of harms way.
My Grandmother, Shafia, immigrated first, followed by my Grandfather a few years later.
The young Dr. Louis Abdu
Dr Abdu, graduating from Medical School at Tufts College, Medford. At Tuft’s he was Class President and Captain of the football team. He had previously received two double promotions while in middle school. He spoke English, Arabic and French and could read and write in Latin.
Dr. Abdu in the Army
Da joined the Army like many of his generation. He arrived in England in November of 1944 and in Belgium in December, a month. His unit was told that the post was a piece of cake, only Grandfather and teenagers in the area. At night, the troops could hear the sounds over heavy machinery moving. when reported, they were it just false sound to trick them. In reality, the Germans were preparing for the largest offensive of the War. A week after he arrived, the Battle of the Bulge began. He, along with 7,000 other allied soldiers were captured and forced marched 35 miles to rail depot to be transported to POW camps.
